The top commander for US and NATO forces in Afghanistan said Wednesday that warring parties now have an “unprecedented” opportunity for peace, and insisted President Donald Trump's strategy for the beleaguered country is working.

He spoke to Pentagon reporters a year after Trump unveiled his strategy for Afghanistan, which includes renewed efforts to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.

There is always opportunity for peace provided the parties to the conflict really wish to seek it. Nothing has changed in Afghanistan in the last year to indicate that reality on the ground has improved ,in fact, all the indicators are that things have got worse. However peace can be achieved if US really wishes to leave Afghanistan and allows the parties to conflict to negotiate peace without external interference and this seems unlikely in the foreseeable future!
