OKARA: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) district emir was arrested on Friday after a brawl with the city deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in his office.

According to the first information report lodged by Sub-Inspector Riaz Ahmed, DSP Rao Naeem Shahid was in his office when two people, later identified as Dr Liaqat Ali Kausar and Rab Nawaz Saqib, came there and started abusive language against the police and objectionable words against the state. The official asked both to have a seat and mind their language but the intruders kept on creating the scene.

The City A-Division Police arrested both Mr Kausar and Mr Saqib under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order.

Dr Kausar who remained Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) president of the Okara chapter several times, also contested the election for PP-190 on the ticket of the Mutahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA).

The PMA, Okara chapter, reacted sharply to the arrest of their former office-bearer at an emergency meeting, presided over by PMA Okara President Dr Ishtiaq Ali. The association decided to protest against the DSP for his rude behavior with a senior citizen and demanded his suspension. Doctors also demanded the withdrawal of cases against the doctor. The JI and the MMA would also protest against the police.
