ISLAMABAD: After remaining under treatment for almost six days at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar was shifted to the Adiala jail on Tuesday.

“His blood tests and other reports were normal and he was feeling better, so it was decided to shift him to the jail,” Pims’ Executive Director Dr Raja Amjad told Dawn.

Mr Safdar was shifted from Adiala jail to Pims on Aug 9 after he developed some medical problem.

He was admitted to the same building of Cardiac Centre where Nawaz Sharif remained under treatment.

Dr Amjad said after keeping him under observation and providing him treatment by a team of doctors, blood and other tests were conducted and the reports were normal.

A doctor of the hospital, requesting not to be quoted, said initially the medical team considered conducting a surgery but as patient’s condition improved it was decided to discharge him without any surgery.

The patient remained under the treatment of a medical team headed by gastroenterologist Dr Mashood Ali.

The patient underwent some radiological tests, including ultrasound. As per standard operating procedure, such patients are admitted to the ward meant for gastro patients.

“Since gastro department lacked a private ward and due to security reasons it was decided to shift him to the Cardiac Centre,” he said.

“The room was declared a sub-jail and no one was allowed to meet the patient without the permission of the jail administration. Moreover, security in the hospital was also increased during his stay,” he said.

Mr Safdar was sentenced to one year in prison by an accountability court on July 6 in the Avenfield apartments reference.
