KARACHI: The Karachi Police is investigating the alleged disappearance of gifts and other valuables presented by foreign dignitaries to the Heads of State and officials of the Government of Pakistan, from the strong room of the old Foreign Office premises, in the Old Assembly Building on Court Road, Karachi.
The local Police have registered a theft case on the report of a Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The gifts and other valuables were placed in a double-locked trunk in the strong room which was guarded round-the-clock by armed sentries.
Police said their investigation had not yet been completed and, therefore, they would not give more details about it.
[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Dacca,] the Governor of East Pakistan, Mr Abdul Monem Khan, was today [Aug 5] presented with two cheques totalling Rs. 1,25,000 as donations towards the Governor’s Relief Fund.
Mr G.M. Choudhury, Deputy Managing Director of the National Bank of Pakistan, presented a cheque for Rs. one lakh while Mr. R.A Bhimjee, Managing Director, Eastern Federal Union Insurance Company Ltd., gave a donation of Rs. 25,000.
While receiving the cheques, the Governor thanked them for their gesture and feelings for the distressed people.
