ISLAMABAD, Jan 9: The visiting congressmen while appreciating the efforts made by Pakistan and its unwavering support towards coalition to fight terrorism have assured the finance minister of continued assistance of USA.

The congressional delegation comprising representatives, Frank R. Wolf, Tony P. Hall and Joseph R. Pitts called on the finance minister, Shaukat Aziz in his office here on Wednesday evening and discussed bilateral relations between the two countries.

Finance minister, while thanking the US for its support to Pakistan, urged the US to maintain a long-term commitment towards Pakistan to ensure poverty reduction and human development.

He emphasized that poverty reduction, better education and health is vital for promoting a more moderate society.

The finance minister apprised the congressmen about the fiscal/economic reforms undertaken by the present government resulting in reduced budget deficit and better regulations of the financial sector.

He also sought the help of the congressmen on market access to Pakistan for textile products. In outlining the achievements made so far on the fiscal reforms, the minister stressed on sustainable long-term relationship between Pakistan and USA for continued stability.

He requested the US to continue to assist Pakistan in obtaining concessional loans for development projects in Pakistan.

They indicated their desire to help Pakistan in achieving its targets towards the reduction of poverty, and development of the social sector infrastructure.

The congressmen also expressed their gratitude to Pakistan for its help in the coalition and promised to convey to the US Congress the importance of Pakistan as an ally of the United States.

They also assured their support for obtaining market access for Pakistani textiles which will help increase exports, create jobs and reduce poverty. —APP
