KARACHI: A watchman was wounded when a grenade exploded in a seminary in Rizvia Society on Friday evening, according to the area police.

They said the explosion occurred near the room of a teacher in the Tanzeemul Makatib seminary. The blast caused fear and panic among residents of the area, they added.

A police team rushed to the spot and took the watchman, Yawar Abbasi, 50, to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital under custody. He was provided first aid and kept in custody for interrogation, the police said.

SHO of the Rizvia Society police station Nawaz Brohi citing preliminary investigation claimed that the hand grenade went off in the hands of the watchman. He argued that the man sustained wounds on his hands.

The officer said that it was yet to be ascertained how and why the grenade was taken into the seminary. Some of the seminary staffers were also taken to the police station for interrogation in this regard, he said.

Meanwhile, the Sindh inspector general of police, Amjad Javed Saleemi, has taken notice of the grenade blast and asked the DIG West to hold an inquiry and submit a report to him immediately, according to a police spokesperson.
