KARACHI: Heaps of uncollected garbage in the City have begun spreading upwards and sideways, at times covering an area four times the size of the Municipal dust bins.

Since April last when the KMC had shifted the responsibility of collecting garbage to the Union Committees, the rubbish has started steadily accumulating in various parts, with practically no arrangements for collection.

In most of the cases, the dumped garbage has spilled over the concrete dust bins and is piled up on the sidewalks and along road-sides, creating a nuisance to the passers-by.

The worst of the over-flowing garbage dumps are located in the slum areas, where the daily garbage yield is plenty — and the garbage collections are few. The Municipal dust bin on Fakir Mohammad Road in Lyari has not been cleared for the last three weeks, and the garbage has spread far and wide on the road.

Confusion prevails as the KMC Health Department now merely advises, and the Union Committees are still unfamiliar with the collection procedure. The Municipal sweepers just sweep the area’s garbage around the dust bins. And they take orders from the Union Committees but are still on the Corporation’s pay rolls. — Correspondent
