Dawn.com and Deutsche Welle (DW) have announced the winners for the video story competition, It Happens Only In Pakistan.

Winning video stories were picked out of over 2,000 entries.

'Waahi', a film by Arsalan Majid, Haris Sehgal, Ghulam Abbas from Karachi, secured the 1st prize of Rs500,000. The film recounts a story of a female farmer Iqbal Mai, and her journey marked by struggle and resilience.

‘'Hidayatkar’ from Karachi by Ahsan Ali, Ammar Rehmani, Kami and Bilal Sagar won the 2nd prize of Rs350,000. This film focuses on the very animated M. H. Hussaini, a fisherman who has written, produced and directed more than 14 films on his own.

The third prize of Rs250,000 was won by Fazal Ahmad and Abdul Basit from Lahore for their film titled ‘Background’. 'Background' revolves around Jani baba, an actor who has played minor supporting roles in more than a 160 Pakistani films since the last 47 years.

Apart from the top three prizes, the contest also had two special honourable mention prizes of Rs150,000 each. These were won by Taimur Rahim and Waheed Ali for their film ‘Mir Bahar, Lord of The Sea’, and Omer Nafees, Rohan Azhar and Bilal Lateef for their film 'Pile of mud, ounce of gold'.

Two social media entries, 'Papu bhai' and 'Qadar', submitted with the hashtag #ItHappensOnlyInPakistan, also won prizes of Rs50,000 each.

All of the winning video stories, as well as shortlisted videos will be published on Dawn.com and DW’s social media accounts.

It Happens Only In Pakistan is a nationwide video story contest organised by Dawn.com and Deutsche Welle (DW). The contest invited filmmakers from all over Pakistan to submit short documentary-styled videos on subjects that are uniquely Pakistani. Jury for the contest included renowned Pakistani documentary filmmakers Jami and Babar Sheikh. The contest accepted entries from March 23 to May7, 2018.
