RAWALPINDI: A Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) employee was shot and killed on the way to work, in the jurisdiction of the Chauntra police, on Wednesday, police said.

Zubair Akbar, 28, was travelling to his office by motorcycle. He was shot, possibly from a distance, and as a result fell on his vehicle on to the road.

Station House Officer (SHO) Zaheeruddin Babar told Dawn it appeared that the bullet was fired at long range.

“It apparently seems like someone had been chasing him and then shot him,” he said, adding that the case did not appear to be a robbery because the victim’s cash, mobile phone and motorcycle were not stolen.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after a postmortem. Police have begun an investigation.

Separately, the body of a teenager who was kidnapped for ransom in Sadiqabad on Tuesday, allegedly by his neighbours, police said. They added that the suspected kidnappers had been arrested and the ransom money had been recovered.

Zeeshan Afzal, 15, left his house Tuesday night for Taraweeh and did not return. His parents launched a door-to-door search and sought the police’s help on Wednesday after they found a letter demanded Rs1.6 million for his release.

The police apprehended the kidnappers by arranging to leave the ransom where they had specified and then apprehending them when they came to retrieve it.

Police said when one of the alleged kidnappers came to collect the ransom, he was arrested and confessed to killing Afzal, who was his friend.

They said two of the three alleged killers were brothers, one of whom was a ninth grade student while his elder brother was in first year. The third was also a ninth grade student.

In their confession, they said they killed their friend because he had insulted them. They will be produced in court for remand custody today (Thursday).
