LAHORE: The Punjab University on Tuesday regularised the service of 169 employees working on daily wages, contract and ad hoc basis for the last five years.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nasira Jabeen had granted approval on the recommendations of selection committee. The non-teaching employees who were regularised had fulfilled the eligibility criteria for the posts and had at least five years continuous service to their credit. The VC issued the notification and regularised the employees with immediate effect.

Moreover, the employees working on women, minority and special persons quotas have also been regularised. The appointees will have to submit their joining within seven days.

The university employees thanked the VC Dr Nasira Jabeen, Registrar Dr Khalid Khan and Additional Registrar-II Malik Muhammad Zaheer for their regularisation and resolving their long-standing issues.

Earlier, 600 employees were working on a contract basis at the PU and some 75 others were allegedly sacked after the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) had written a letter to all the VCs of public universities raising questions on the hiring.

The PU administration under former Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zakria Zakar had initiated the move to stop the renewal of contracts of non-teaching staff.

The contract employees, including those working on BPS-16 and 17, have been holding protests outside the vice chancellor’s office demanding renewal of their contracts. However, service of the employees working on BPS 16 and 17 has not been renewed yet.
