From being eyed to play Spider-Man in 2002 to being in talks to essay the bad guy in the upcoming sequel for the new trilogy, it seems like Jake Gyllenhaal was just meant to join the comic book movie universe.

According to Deadline, Gyllenhaal is in line to join Spidey villains; the actor will apparently play Mysterio, a classic Spidery villain co-created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He will be joining Michael Keaton, who will return to reprise his role of Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Tom Holland is returning to play Peter Parker, with Zendaya and Marisa Tomei also coming back for the sequel. Besides them, Jon Watts will also return as director.

In the comics, Mysterio is a disgruntled former Hollywood stuntman who becomes a criminal after failing to succeed in the showbiz.

The film will be released July 5, 2019.
