MOHAMMAD Inam, the Pakistani wrestler, is surely an unsung hero but he deserves is a standing ovation from the nation and its leaders.

Being the sole gold medalist for Pakistan at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in the Australian city of Gold Coast, he should have been acknowledged, but the national media has been found wanting in this regard. As for our national leadership, it apparently has more serious affairs to deal with than shower praises on a champion wrestler.

With hockey no more bringing us the laurels it used to, our hopes remain pinned on our wrestlers, weightlifters and boxers to do us proud. It seems the nation’s obsession with hockey –Pakistan’s national sport — is considered the only worthy game. If this is so, why?

I CONGRATULATE Pakistani wrestlers Mohammad Inam Butt and Tayyab Raza for their amazing feats and bringing pride to the Pakistani people by winning the gold medal and bronze medal respectively in the 21st Commonwealth Games held in Australia.

Pakistan was among the countries that won a gold medal and stood 22nd in the nations that won medals now in the Commonwealth Games. The sad part is our sports heroes were not received at the airports when they returned home despite the fact they made the nation proud. Gone are the days when every sport was valued.

This is a request to the people to cherish and value our sports heroes.
