Three female university students suffered burns in an acid attack carried out by three men in Gujrat on Thursday morning, DawnNewsTV reported.
According to the police, the students — two sisters and another girl — were at a bus stop when three men on a motorcycle threw acid on them. The victims have been taken to Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Hospital where they are being treated for the burns on their faces.
Danga police station SHO Ameer Abbas told DawnNewsTV that the primary suspect was the uncle of the two sisters who were attacked. Another accused was identified as the uncle's friend. The SHO's statements were seconded by one of the victims.
The uncle and his friend managed to escape, Abbas said, while the third suspect has been arrested.
According to the police, one of the girls had refused a marriage proposal which was the reason behind the attack.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Inspector General of Police Arif Nawaz took notice of the incident, ordering the Gujranwala regional police officer and Gujrat district police officer to submit a detailed report of the incident. They directed the police to arrest the suspects within 24 hours.

Why does not the Pakistani government restrict the sale of acid in the open market? High restrictions on the sale of acids must be put and it should be sold only to selective people with full information of the purpose it is supposed to be used for. Acid attacks on innocent women in Pakistan continue to shake our conscience time and again as we hear the appalling stories of the survivors. Acid attacks have been counted among the worst form of harm that can be caused to one human by another.

This and many more incidences of varied anti-social, immoral and illegal incidences throughout length and breadth of the country reveal the tragic reality that our society has been opened to unbridled 'freedom' away from traditional social norms too quickly. Add on this another oddity of the worsening economic gap and it is spelling disaster. Sadly when everyone wants to get his way, by book of crook, from top to bottom, there be no befitting consequences, media in general and social media in particular, be busy glamorizing by siding with one wrongdoers or the other, political correctness be striving to hide the ugly truths, it can only spell disasters of national proportions, which it is proving to become, if not checked responsibly.
