WITH reference to Fareeha Khan’s article ‘Crushed at crunch time’ (March 25, Eos magazine). The writer has pointed out the woes of workers who face inhuman treatment at the hands of monster-like managers on a daily basis. Such inhumane treatment is faced by a majority of career-seekers irrespective of their colour, creed and gender.

I would like to share my own experience here. Some three years ago, my younger brother was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer. Instead of consoling me as a human being, my seniors put greater work pressure on me. I soon realised that I was working with wicked persons who have little or no regard for human sentiments. When they rejected my application for leave without pay, I had to decide to quit the job.

My brother was counting the last days of his life. This hard decision rendered me a pauper but made me morally stronger as it saved me the lifelong remorse of not paying full attention to my brother’s health. His peaceful departure in our arms is a precious memory.

Today, though I have a low- paid job, I am mentally happy and contented. Albert Einstein rightly said: “A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the constant pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.”
