Power problems

Published February 23, 2018

MEDIA reports state that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has fined the National Transmission and Dispatch Company Rs10 million for non- completion or for the inordinate delayed completion of important high voltage transmission networks essential for the full utilisation of power from different generating plants.

The amount of fine seems a bad joke compared to the colossal losses incurred by the exchequer owing to underutilisation. It seems someone in Nepra did not do their homework and came up with a random figure arbitrarily.

To be honest, the power sector is badly mismanaged and needs a drastic and complete overhaul. What is needed is a fair and impartial enquiry into the power ministry and subordinate bodies’ affairs.
