ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb has been elected chairperson of the parliamentary special committee on child abuse.

The committee, during its meeting on Monday, recommended that a detailed report should be obtained regarding the latest laws — including delegated legislation and judgement on child abuse — for the next meeting.

Ms Aurangzeb’s name was proposed for the post by MNA Romina Khurshid Alam during a meeting held earlier to elect its chairperson at the Parliament House. Zahid Hamid seconded the proposal and the committee unanimously elected Ms Aurangzeb as its head.

It is pertinent to mention that after seven-year-old Zainab was raped and murdered in Kasur, the public demanded legislation to address the issue of child abuse.

On Jan 22, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Interior Senator Rehman Malik, announced that a bill would be passed for public hanging of the culprits of child sexual abuse and murder.
