ISLAMABAD: Two police officials were arrested after a case was registered against them over the death of a motorcyclist on Sunday.

The motorcyclist was killed and his two pillion riders were injured when the two-wheeler slipped and hit the median of a road at Blue Area after a police official tried to catch one of them, alleged an uncle of one of the injured.

After the incident, scores of people blocked the road and pelted the police with stones.

Two cases were registered with the Kohsar police on Monday. One of the FIRs was registered against the two police officials and the driver of the motorcycle who died in the accident.

The other case was registered against those who damaged public property and attacked the police after the incident. The second FIR was, however, sealed on the directives of senior officers.

The first FIR was registered under section 319 (punishment for qatl-i-khata) and 320 (punishment for qatl-i-khata by rash or negligent driving) of the Pakistan Penal Code in response to a complaint lodged by Sunil Michael, an uncle of one of the injured.

When contacted, Mr Michael told Dawn that he lodged the complaint after getting information from his nephew who was injured in the incident. He said his nephew along with his two friends was returning home on a motorcycle when they were signaled by the police to stop. One of the officials grabbed the hand of the driver that resulted into the incident, he added.

The three youngsters were friends and worked at a car service station in Blue Area.

An official at the Kohsar police, when contacted, told Dawn that the two police officials were produced in court from where they were sent to jail on judicial remand.

The driver, who died in the accident, was booked for negligence and rash driving, he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Najibur Rehman confirmed that two cases had been registered over the incident. The second case was registered as law and order situation was created by those who were not affected by the incident, the SSP added.
