Motorbike track

Published January 22, 2018

ON a recent visit to Karachi I was horrified to see traffic anarchy and the way millions of motorcyclists drive. I do not mean to say that other drivers -- those of cars, buses and delivery and school vans -- drive any better. But motorcyclists drive at break-neck speed.

It is almost suicidal. At almost light speed they move across lanes and through fast-moving vehicles, endangering themselves and those on the pillion. One-way streets and traffic lights do not matter to them; roads are for them. Besides, like car drivers, they consider wrong-side driving as normal and police do not take any notice.

However, I have one suggestion to make. In some countries they have reserved a separate track for motorcyclists. The track is separated by a grille barrier. This way they conform to one side of the road and do not endanger themselves and others. I wonder if the Karachi police chief will consider my suggestion.
