EOBI pension

Published January 21, 2018

APROPOS the letter ‘EOBI pension’ (Jan 13). I agree with the writer’s concern about the paltry amount being paid to pensioners under the EOBI scheme. However, with inflation running in double digits, it is impossible for a senior citizen to survive on a meager sum of Rs7,000 per month as recommended by the author.

It is common knowledge that the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution has made huge investments in real estate (commercial, industrial and residential) and also in other sectors but do not pass on the accrued benefits to its pensioners.

The sufferings of EOBI pensioners are multiplying with every passing day.

The state provides no monetary benefits or concessions to senior citizens as done in other civilised countries. Ageing gracefully is the desire of all citizens and they wish to overcome the challenges with dignity and grace. It is regrettable that our senior citizens who have given so much to this country are not cared for by the government in their twilight years.

I appeal to the authorities to revise the EOBI pension to a more respectable amount, which should be at least Rs12,000 per month.

OUR government seems to be indifferent to the poor condition of EOBI pensioners. In spite of several requests, the government has not enhanced the pension for the last three years. They are still getting a pension of Rs5250 which is not enough for sustenance.

I, very strongly make a plea to the government to raise it to Rs15,000 instantly.
