PLANNED open spaces are mandatory for any modern city. In Pakistan, the demand for land is rapidly increasing particularly in the cities and towns.
This has put severe pressure on available public spaces, and many parks, grounds and other recreational spaces have been turned into commercial buildings.
The federal government’s housing and works ministry’s National Reference Manual on Planning and Infrastructure Standards lays down the criteria for compulsory public spaces, which are not being followed. Owing to lack of public open spaces, many people have no access to recreation and amusement.
Open spaces play a pivotal role in improving the quality of life in urban areas. The authorities should ensure the provision of public spaces as this in turn guarantees a happy and healthy society.
