KARACHI: Pakistan No. 1 and top seed Asim Qureshi, along with second seed Mohammad Rameez went through to the men’s singles quarter-finals of the 54th Jubilee Insurance National Table Tennis Championships being held at the Islamia Club on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old Asim, who is seeking his sixth men’s singles title, brushed aside Shahzaib Raza 11-6, 11-4, 11-8 in the third round and then sent junior sensation Ummam Khuwaja packing 11-3, 12-10, 11-6 in the pre-quarters to inch closer towards the ultimate crown.

It is pertinent to mention that Asim has helped Wapda retain the men’s team event crown on Monday.

Last year’s runner-up Mohammad Rameez also won back-to-back matches to advance into the last eight. He carved out 11-4, 14-12, 11-9 victory over Owais Hassan in the third round and then conceded second game before overcoming Fahim Raza 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 in the pre quarters.

Meanwhile, the quartet of top seed Shabnam Bilal, second seed Ayesha Sharjeel, third seed Rahila Kashif and fourth seed Maliha Ansar made it to the last four.

Shabnam accounted for Sadia Raheel 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 while Ayesha carved out 11-4, 11-3, 11-13, 12-10, 11-7 victory over Ayesha Fahim.

In a clash of two former national champions, Rahila defeated Ghalia Mohsin 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-2, 11-9. Maliha Ansar was home 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 over Sanam Yaseen.
