Akshay Kumar's Padman trailer is out

Padman is based on the true story of an Indian man who empowered women to make low-cost sanitary pads

"Half hour... Half hour man bleeding like woman, they straight dying!"

Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Akshay Kumar.

The trailer for Akshay's next Bollywood venture Padman is out, and it's nothing short of a shocker, to say the least.

Slated for release next year on January 26, India's Republic Day, Padman is based on the true story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man who built machines to enable women in rural areas to manufacture low-cost sanitary pads for their communities.

As can be seen in the trailer, Padman aims to normalise the conversation around menstruation and menstrual hygiene. Akshay ─ called Lakshmikant Chauhan in the film ─ plays the character of Muruganantham who was ostracised by his community and family, including his wife, as menstruation remains a taboo subject in India.

You see Lakshmikant trying to understand what women experience during menstruation, checking how comfortable the low-cost padding he has invented is and if it at all compromises their agility... all the while trying to ensure full coverage to curb possibility of blood stains.

You see him trying to talk sense into his wife, sisters and people about how important it is to address the problems related to menstrual hygiene instead of feeling ashamed about it.

You see a man who is sensitive to women's daily struggles, and one who understands that anything men can do, women can do bleeding.

With intense moments and important messages, Padman is definitely one to look out for in 2018.

Laudable! Generating awareness in the subcontinent is needed to get rid of age-old wrong notions.
