KARACHI, May 2: After completion of additional 100mgd K-III water supply project in the next 6 months, work on 100mgd K-IV water supply project will be started.

This was stated by City Nazim Niamatullah Khan while inaugurating two water supply schemes in separate ceremonies held in UC-2 and 8 in the Orangi Town on Sunday.

Inaugurating a 12inch-dia water pipeline in UC-8, the nazim said that water supply in Karachi was a complicated problem and priority steps had been taken for its solution.

In this regard he referred to the additional 100mgd K-III water supply scheme with the financial assistance of the federal government and informed that it would be completed in the next 6 months.

The nazim further said that planning for the K-4 project was underway.

He said that at present Karachi was being supplied 480mgd water from the river Indus and 90mgd from the hub dam while after the installation of sea water treatment plant by a US firm, the city could be supplied additional 50mgd water.

The nazim said the city government was looking for more firms to start more water supply schemes for the city.

He informed that an agreement had been concluded with an Austrian company to set up plant for recycling of industrial sewerage.

Inaugurating the pumping station lying incomplete for the last 20 years in UC-2 IlahiAbad, the city nazim gave city government the credit to have had completed such delayed projects in the education, health, water and sewerage sectors.

He pointed out that attention had been paid to all areas of the city for improvement of infrastructure and implementation of other schemes.

The city government, he stated, also initiated priority steps for the development and improvement of suburbs and various projects of roads, water and sewerage completed in areas like Baldia, Lyari, Korangi, Malir and Orangi while many more schemes were under completion.

He informed that at present three roads namely Siddiq Wahab, Bhitai and Tannery Roads were being constructed in Lyari while in Orangi various roads had already been completed.

Mr Khan said that Shahrah-i-Orangi was under completion at a cost of Rs400 million.

He announced construction of a model park in UC-8.

The nazim said that the city government would provide Rs6.4m to each of the union councils in the new budget.

MNA Laeeq Khan and former MNA Afaq Khan Shahid also spoke on these occasions.

Garbage station: Priority steps are being taken for the construction of garbage transfer station in Karachi and proposals of various companies in this regard are being examined.

This was stated by City Nazim Niamatullah Khan in a meeting with Lasbela District Nazim Jam Kamal Khan here on Monday.

On the occasion the city nazim was briefed about the existing garbage lifting system and informed that garbage was dumped at Landfil sites Jam Chakro and Gondpass.

The Lasbela district nazim offered the dumping of garbage in Lasbela area instead of Gondpass site to use the same for power generation.

He said Environment Foundation had offered to set up a plant for power generation from garbage on BOT basis.—APP
