KARACHI, Oct 20: The City Nazim, Niamatullah Khan, on Monday emphasized the role of research institutes in evolving paradigms, which, he hoped, would enable the country and the Muslim Ummah to face the challenges of perception and capabilities.

He was speaking at the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs, where he handed over a cheque of Rs100,000 to its Chairman Fatehyab Ali Khan, as a grant from the city government for institute’s library.

Mr Khan emphasized that the Muslim Ummah needed better understanding of the challenges being faced by it all over the world and maintained that in this connection visit of the Saudi Crown Prince, Abdullah, was highly important and would help facilitate such efforts.

He commended the role of PIIA in disseminating knowledge through its elaborate library, besides its research endeavours, but added that more efforts were needed in this regard.

He said the city government, with its limited resources, was doing its best to support libraries and hoped that in future such assistance would increase if resources of the city government registered any increase.

Earlier, the PIIA chairman informed the city Nazim regarding the working of the institute and its financial constraints.

TEACHERS’ TRAINING: Meanwhile, City Nazim Naimatullah Khan said on Monday that the country was progressing towards a modern and model education system, where children would be trained and educated on ideological basis, adds PPI.

He stated this while speaking at the inaugural session of Teachers Training Course, organized by the Children Resource International, in collaboration with the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) at a local hotel.

Appreciating the efforts of country manager, Children Resource Centre, Mehnaz Akbar Aziz, he said the course was a vital step towards modernizing the education system in Pakistan.

The city government would take all steps to modernize the educational institutions of the city, he said.

General Douglas Ron, American Consul General, speaking on the occasion assured that the US would extend its cooperation for implementing American education system in Pakistan.

He asked the teachers to encourage the students in asking questions in classroom and added that schools were pivotal for development and democracy all over the worked and lauded the efforts to modernize the education sector in Pakistan.

CRC Country Manager Mehnaz Akbar Aziz said that 422 classrooms in 120 schools had been modernized by the organization working since April 2001 in Pakistan.

Sindh Education Secretary Ghulam Ali Pasha said that the government backed the efforts for modernizing education and improving educational institutions.

Foreign experts will train teachers in modern education during the programme that will continue for four days.
