Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar Ahmed was granted 14-day casual leave soon after the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Operations Tanveer Odho ordered an inquiry into the police action at Stargate which resulted in 27 people being injured.

The injuries were caused when police allegedly opened fire at people gathered near Stargate last week on Karachi's main artery, Sharea Faisal, in support of Faizabad protesters.

AIG Mushtaq Mehar has been asked to conduct the inquiry to "identify the circumstances" which led to the injuries, including those of two policemen, and "to determine whether the use of force to that extent was warranted or not," a notification issued from AIG Odho's office said.

The inquiry report will be submitted by December 11 while Anwar's leave will end on December 13.

SSP Landhi Arif Aslam will serve in place of Anwar during the period, a separate notification issued by IG Sindh A.D. Khawaja said.
