THE Zamzama gas unit belonging to BHP Billiton is also located in Dadu district. That said Wahi Pandhi is only 25km from the gas field but is devoid of gas supplies.
Comprising 800 villages, Wahi Pandhi is an area of Johi taluka with a population of about 60,000. Local people cut trees for cooking but the smoke and ash from firewood have caused eye and skin diseases.
Given advancements in science and technology, and when all countries in the world are committed to providing basic facilities, and also controlling deforestation and reducing carbon emissions, the non-availability of gas to towns like Wahi Pandhi — that, too, in close proximity to gas fields — raises many questions about the government’s commitment to poor communities.
First, if the government ensures homes are provided with gas, it will save the area from further deforestation, which is otherwise a challenge to the state.
Second, it will reduce the burning of wood causing carbon dioxide emissions. Last, but not least, it will relieve women of eye and skin infections.
