There's a new rumour in Gotham City and we can't wait to find out if it's true or not.

According to Screenrant, Matt Reeves, the director behind the upcoming Batman movie, has met Jake Gyllenhaal to discuss the possibility of him playing the next Bruce Wayne instead of Ben Affleck.

Up until July, everyone assumed Affleck will yet again play the caped crusader in the upcoming solo Batman film, but the Justice League star has been dropping hints that he may not continue with the trilogy.

Time and again, Affleck has indicated he is uncertain about playing Batman; in one interview he says he is "contemplating" starring in the solo Batman film.

"You don’t do it forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it," he told USA Today.

Nothing has been set in stone yet, of course. Screenrant reports that the rumour about Gyllenhaal playing the new Batman should be taken with a pinch of salt until further notice.

Previously, Gyllenhaal had auditioned for the role Christopher Nolan's Batman when he was casting for Batman Begins, but he ultimately lost the role to Christian Bale.

It is still entirely possible that Affleck will ultimately retain the title role in the new Batman and/or maybe we'll see Bruce Wayne passing his cape down to another character (played by a younger actor).
