NEW DELHI, Aug 27: The proximity of the planet Mars is likely to be “hostile” for India, astrologers warned.

Lachhman Das Madan, chief of the Astrology Study and Research Institute in New Delhi, said the Mars encounter was “a dark planetary configuration” and would unleash “negative energy”.

“I have been telling anyone who cares to listen that according to my calculations the earth will face serious and violent convulsions from July 29 onwards,” he said.

“Earth and Mars are drawing together for their closest approach in some 60,000 years on Aug 27, 2003. Apart from that, the entire planetary configurations are hostile to the world.

“As we can see India is already being sorely tested. There have been scores of deaths and more violence is to come.”

The gloom and doom prediction came as a massive stampede in the holy town of Nashik on Wednesday left at least 45 people, mostly women and children, dead and more than 100 injured.

It was the second tragedy in India this week. On Monday, 52 people were killed in twin car bombings in Mumbai.

DEATH AND DESTRUCTION: Death and destruction will stalk the Earth after Mars, bringer of war, terrorism and disaster, rumbled on Wednesday to its closest point to our planet for 60,000 years, awestruck astrologers warn.

While stargazers excitedly grab their telescopes for an unprecedented glimpse of the Red Planet, soothsayers insist the focus should instead be on survival, as Earth’s violent celestial neighbour rampages ominously close.

Whether their trembling hands were divining the horoscope’s planetary play or the ethereal clues of Feng Shui, every astrologer was in agreement: cosmic catastrophe is on the cards for an already-troubled Earth.

Their ominous predictions came in the wake of two deadly car bombs in Mumbai that killed 52 people and were the work, according to Kanthan, not of the militants named as prime suspects, but of Mars.

As if to confirm his suspicions, the subcontinent was beset by another tragedy as the planet drew closer, with at least 45 people killed or injured in a stampede at a Hindu festival in western India.

In Thailand, where Buddhist calm was unsettled by the arrest this month of a major terror kingpin allegedly plotting attacks in Bangkok, mystics were also casting an uneasy eye towards the heavens.

“When it comes towards the Earth, people should be careful about their emotions because it will put people in a bad mood and spark conflicts,” warned the country’s leading astrologer Pinyo Pongcharoen.

“It will also increase the chances of war, terrorism and accidents,” he told the Thai-language Daily News.

In Hong Kong, only just recovering from the effects of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, Feng Shui master and astrologer Chung King-kwong offered another doom-laden forecast.

“There will be more natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons as well as huge temperature changes and climatic swings,” he said, pointing to recent heatwaves in Europe blamed for the deaths of thousands.—AFP
