ISLAMABAD, Aug 26: The interior ministry has directed the provinces to ensure the implementation of Police Order-2002 in letter and spirit before the end of September, sources said.

At a meeting presided over by the interior minister, Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat, with top provincial officials, including home secretaries and inspector generals, it was decided to accelerate the enforcement of the Order.

It was decided at the meeting that public safety commissions would be put in place by the end of September.

The provincial officials have been asked to come up with weekly reports about the progress on the implementation of the order.

There are some reports that provinces had opposed the Police Order-2002 and termed it against the provincial autonomy.

The government has asked the provinces to take up their organizational problems with the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) especially in cases where interpretation of police order was required or some amendment was sought.

The federal and provincial officials discussed the steps taken for its enforcement and the administrative, financial and operational problems in way of its expeditious implementation.

The source said a follow-up review meeting will be held in September 10 to ascertain the pace of progress with regards to full implementation of police reforms.

The Police Order-2002 is aimed at revamping the police system, making it service-oriented, bringing justice, equity before the law, respect for human rights and dignity of the individual through empowerment of citizens.

The source said public safety commissions have already been set up in several districts across the country.

Similarly, Police Complaints Authorities (PCA), to be in place in line with the Police Order, will also be vital in making police discharge their duties efficiently.
