LAHORE, Aug 26: The chairman, Central Board of Revenue (CBR), Riaz Malik said on Tuesday the Medium Taxpayers Unit (MTU) presently catering to the needs of 12,000 tax payers, has now come of age.
“It has now developed the capacity to cater to the needs of about 100,000 tax payers,” he said while talking to APP here.
At present four circles of Income Tax Department (Eastern Region) are being dealt by the MTU, however, he disclosed, the number of circles was being increased to 18, i.e. 15 commercial and three salaried.
Malik expressed the hope that the MTU would ultimately be the successor of the Income Tax Zone B of Lahore while providing all necessary facilities to the tax payers.
He said it was very difficult to set up MTUs across the country, as computerization of all the data on tax payers scattered in a host of offices would be a Herculean task, he added. “Computerization of data of the taxpayers of Lahore is itself a big achievement,” he observed.
About the Large Tax Payers Unit at Karachi, he said that presently it was dealing with 300 corporate taxpayers like PSO, PIA and many other big corporate and industrial giants.
“The number is likely to rise to the level of 600 in the near future,” he said.—APP
