LAHORE, Jan 5: Showing magnificent speed, the bay filly Daring Eagle stormed home to win the New Year Cup run over the sprinting distance of five furlongs at the Racecourse on Saturday.

The 13th Lahore Winter Meeting races were scheduled to be held on Sunday but were brought forward by a day to enable race lovers see the Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup race to be held at Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

As the starting gates sprung open, the rank outsider three- year-old filly Daring Eagle took a fine start with the fancied filly Sound Of Music. Both the fillies fought neck to neck for the supremacy until the home turn when surprisingly Sound Of Music went wide on the outer tan.

Meanwhile Daring Eagle took a commanding lead and drew away from the pack to finally win by one-and-a-half lengths from late rushing chestnut filly Flame. Sound Of Music tried to stage a fight back but only to finish third , three-and-three quarters of length further behind.

The bay filly Red Storm, who burst her blood-vessel during the race completed the frame two-and-a-half lengths further back.

The winner looked a tough and speedy stock of the progenies of Shogun out-of- Fleur De Oro and was ably piloted by the riding boy Shahzad Ahmad. She is trained by Memraiz Khan. Daring Eagle clocked one minute 2 3/5 seconds over the distance. This was the fourth race of the day.

In all, eight ran for the event, a term race for three-year- old thoroughbred colts and fillies, considered to be the first mile-stone in their career.

The third and main supporting event, the Mian Channu Plate , a class V handicap race, run over seven furlongs was won by the speedy bay mare Fanim in a record time.

Taking a good start behind the front-runner Half Love Fanim burst into lead after going over three furlongs and then began to draw away from the field. Mid-way through the race it seemed she had the race in safe keeping and by the finishing line she was seven-and-a-half lengths ahead of Half Love.

The bay colt Crown Maker came staggering behind two-and-three quarters of a length to finish third while One Man Show completed the board, five lengths further behind. In all, eleven contested the event.

Fanim returned a record fastest time of one minute 25 1/5 seconds for the race distance. She beat the previous best time of one minute 25 2/5 seconds by a fraction of a second set up by Admiral’s Way on Feb 27 in 2000. Riding boy Faisal rode the winner.
