HYDERABAD, Aug 24: A large number of residents of the Shikari goth, Hussainabad, and family members of the six labourers who were crushed to death by a tanker near Loonikot held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday.

They were protesting against the release of the tanker driver by the police.

The demonstration was held under the banner of the Pakistan Tehrikk-i-Insaaf.

Speaking on the occasion, Hassan Pathan and others condemned the police for releasing the driver.

They demanded a compensation of Rs5 million for the bereaved families and rearrest of the driver.

COPS BOOKED: The Tandojam police have booked an ASI and a constable after a hardened criminal, Mehal Detho, escaped from the lock up of the Tando Jam police station, reports our correspondent.

The case was registered under sections 223, 224 and 225-A of the PPC on the complaint of the SHO, Tandojam police station, Mohammad Khan Zaunr.

Detho was arrested by the Tandojam police as he was allegedly involved in the murder case of an excise official, Shams Qureshi, robberies, and explosion on the railway tracks near the Detha railway station.

Police said that he was wanted in 45 criminal cases. A TT pistol, two magazines and 45 live bullets were recovered from him. He was brought to the Tandojam police station for interrogation. He was kept blindfolded and handcuffed while being interrogated.

Police said that as soon as his wishes were complied to, he overturned the table on the ASI and pushed the constable and escaped. Both the policemen have been suspended.
