KARACHI, Aug 22: Motorists are exposed to danger at the old Numaish roundabout with no traffic signals at the Sharhrah-i- Quaideen and M.A.Jinnah Road junction and vehicles coming in speed from Gurumandir and Shahrah-i-Quaideen.

Vehicles approaching Saddar and adjacent areas from Gurumandir and Shahrah-i-Quaideen at a very fast speed meet at the junction of Shahrah-i-Quaideen and M.A.Jinnah Road, which results in a traffic mess-up at this junction.

The roundabout recently built by city government has further increased the chances of major accidents. There is no outlet for the traffic approaching Gurumandir, Shahrah-i-Quaideen and Bretto Road from Nizami Road Lines Area, and motorists try to approach these places from the main roundabout by using the wrong side of the road near Khatm-i-Nabuwat mosque.

There emerges a very serious situation when public transport vehicles, coming from the Guru Mandir side, in their attempt to drop the passengers at one side of M.A.Jinnah Road, often overtake other vehicles coming at a very high speed from Shahrah-i-Quaideen, posing a serious threat to the passengers. Not a single traffic police official is seen there to control the traffic coming from Shahrah-i-Quaideen.

Officials concerned of the transport and communication department of the city government said they did not foresee the problem while designing the roundabout and due to non-availability of land no link road was constructed for vehicles approaching Shahrah-i-Quaideen, Guru Mandir and Bretto Road from Liners Area.

They said that during the designing a link road was considered on an open ground, but the refusal of the Quaid Mausoleum Management Board (QMMB), which owns the land, made it impossible.

They said that despite the refusal of QMMB to hand over the land they were constantly in touch with the board to persuade them to hand over the land, but the efforts were not yet succeeded.

They added if the QMMB did not hand over the land there would be no solution of the problem.—PPI
