Neighbourhood Club clinch girls basketball title

KARACHI: Fancied Neighbourhood Club swept aside PECHS Girls College 39-14 in the final to clinch the Sindh Sports Board (SSB) girls basketball tournament at the latter’s court on Tuesday.

The final fell short of expectations as the winners led 28-8 at the half time.

The trio of Naziha, Hanan and Mahrukh caught the eye with their outstanding performance and steered the team to ocerwhelming success.

Naziha finished in double figures with a score of 10 while Hanan and Mahrukh also proved equally good with a tally of eight points apiece for the winners.

Huraina hogged limelight for the losers with eight points and was followed by Zoha four.

Captain of the Neighbourhood team Naziha received the winning trophy from the chief guest Dr Asma Ali Shah amidst applause. Huraina received the runners-up trophy.

S.M.B Fatima Jinnah College was awarded the Fair Play trophy. Besides, all the competing teams were presented individual prizes.

Special awards were also given to the principal of the PECHS Girls College Prof Tatheer Fatima and sports incharge of the college Ms Nuzhat.

Eight teams participated in the contest that was held under the aegis of Karachi Basketball Association (KBA) women’s wing.

Also in attendance at the presentation ceremony were KBA women’s wing officials Amna Mukhtar, Zaima Tariq besides the KBA president Ghulam Mohammad.—Sports Correspondent

Sajjad, Bilal make last-16 at Ashgabat

KARACHI: National champion Mohammad Sajjad and Mohammad Bilal conjured up contrasting victories over their opponents to sneak into last-16 round of the 6-Reds snooker event in Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games at Ashgabat on Tuesday.

According to information reaching here, Sajjad, who is reigning Asian 6-Reds champion, survived a scare when he overcome fighting Sharaf Maaith of Jordan 5-4 in the fully stretched battle.

He won the decisive ninth frame to win the battle 55-7, 2-56, 9-75, 44-21, 28-34, 78-0, 79-9, 8-60, 41-1.

Contrary to Sajjad, Asian 6-Reds bronze medalist Bilal coasted to straight 30-5, 36-20, 40-5, 41-12, 35-11 victory over Vietnam’s Binh Nguyen.

Karachi girls netball event from Oct 10

KARACHI: The Sindh Netball Association (SNA) and the Pakistan Netball Federation (PNF) will jointly be organising the Karachi Girls Netball Tournament 2017 at the PSB Coaching Centre from Oct 10-12, Secretary General, SNA Ajaz ul Haque announced on Tuesday.

This event comprises two categories including school level for the under-17 players and the College-University level which has no age limit.

The players and teams will receive trophies, medals, certificates and prizes from the organizing committee. The top three teams of this tournament will also become eligible to participate in 1st National Inter-School Netball Championship at Islamabad.

The SNA has requested all schools, colleges and universities to submit the registration form by Sept 26th at the PNF office in Room# 214, 2nd Floor, Panorama Centre-1, Saddar. The managers’ meeting and draws will be held on Oct 5 at 11.00am in the PNF office.—Agencies

Kabaddi federation plans to invite Iran, Yemen

LAHORE: The Pakistan Kabaddi Federation general council plans to invite Iran and Yemen national teams to prepare for the upcoming Asian Championships in Iran, PKF president Shujaat Hussain said during a meeting he chaired.

Shujat said the Pakistan team will also visit Sri Lanka and Indonesia later this year.

The PKF president also vowed the federation will promote women kabaddi in collaboration with other nations.

The general council also amended its constitution and approved the construction of a new office for the PKF chairman who’ll be elected later.—Sports Reporter

KARACHI: The 5th Indus Pharma National Seniors & Juniors Tennis Championship will be played at the Karachi Gymkhana from Sept 23-29, the Karachi Tennis Association (KTA) announced on Tuesday.

The events to be contested include juniors U-18 singles and doubles, U-16 singles, U-14 singles, U-12 singles, U-10 singles for both boys and girls 10 & under, girls U-14 singles, seniors 35-plus doubles, seniors 45-plus singles, soft tennis singles & doubles and para sports girls and boys tennis competitions will also be part of the championship.—Agencies
