KARACHI, Aug 18: The issue of growing cases of vehicle theft/snatching was discussed at a high-level meeting presided over by the provincial Chief Secretary Dr Mutawakkil Qazi in his office here on Monday.

Senior officials of various relevant departments put forward recommendations for an effective control with a view to chalking out a strategy in this regard.

Home Secretary Syed Anwaar Haider, Additional Home Secretary Agha Jan Akhtar, Secretary of Industries & Transport Raja Muhammad Abbas, Secretary of Excise & Taxation Abdul Subhan Memon, CCPO Asad Ashraf Malik, IGP Syed Kamal Shah, DIG (Investigation) Muhammad Akbar, Chief of the CPLC Sharfuddin Memon and SSP of the ACLC Abdul Razzaq Cheema attended the meeting.

The meeting had a critical review of the registration, number plates and verification procedures in the context of carjacking and compiled the recommendations after discussing different important aspects of the issues.

It was decided that the Central Board of Revenue would be requested to furnish a weekly report on bills of entry, pertaining to the transactions by Customs, to the E&T department, CPLC and ACLC.

It was also decided that the registration wing of the E&T department would charge Rs20 for providing details of the ownership of and outstanding dues against a vehicle when approached to seek transfer of the vehicle.

The meeting took anther decision on reintroducing the system of sandblasting of registration, engine and chassis numbers on the vehicles’ windscreens.

The meeting recommended implementation of strict measures to check theft of number plates and carrying out snap checking. It decided to take measures on integrating Jamshoro and Uthal check posts with the CPLC and ACLC through wireless system.—PPI
