KARACHI, Aug 17: A campaign has been launched in Lyari Town to drain out the water accumulated on major roads and streets causing insanitary conditions in most of the areas.
Civic authorities are engaged to pump out the rainwater mixed with sewage on Shah Latif Bhittai Road and created stinking conditions in the locality.
Municipal workers are plugging the leakages in pipelines and draining out the stinking water accumulated on the road round the clock.
Area people and youths continued to block the route from Kalri police station to Ali Hotel on third consecutive day, on Wednesday, by putting road obstructions as a mark of protest against insanitation in the locality.
The Bhittai Road is the worst affected area in the entire town. It links Lyari Town with Saddar Town via Kharadar and SITE Town via Mirza Adam Khan Road, which is situated on the Lyari River’s bank.
The road was badly damaged during the recent monsoon rains. The situation had been aggravated with the collapse of sewerage system in the locality, resulting in accumulation stinking water on the road.
On the other hand, heaps of garbage in various parts of Lyari Town is posing a serious health problem.
The distressing sight of heaps of garbage and unattended debris, which are posing health hazards, can be seen every where on roads, streets and a number of public places. The designated garbage sites in many places have either been disappeared or occupied by the land-grabbers.
These sites with overflowing garbage have aggravated the sanitary problem, exposing the people to health hazards.
The situation is getting more painful as civic agencies could not manage it, forcing the people to live under sub-human conditions, despite their frequent protests in this regard.
Area people blame the inefficiency, negligence and mismanagement of the officials concerned, as a major factor for the present mess.
Residents and community leaders say that the new local body system seems to be incapable of performing its normal functions and all efforts to revamp it have been failed.
Officials concede that they could not deliver effective services due to shortage of funds, equipment and necessary staff.
Garbage collection and its disposal is one of the serious problems faced by the town administration, as over the years most of the garbage sites in the locality have been disappeared with the increase in land grabbing activity. This also has resulted in the emergence of informal garbage sites.
The worst affected areas are Nawababad, Daryabad, Memon Society, Khadda, Shah Beg Lane, Kalri and some parts of Baghdadi, where people are subjected to live in miserable conditions. Most of these localities have informal dumping in every street and road side, where garbage are littered unattended. One could hardly endure the smell from an informal garbage dumping site, while passing through a street in these areas.
