KARACHI: Various parts of the city, especially district East, received some rain on Monday afternoon which brought relief for residents of the city from hot weather.

When we were going to press late at night, some parts of the city were experiencing heavy rains.

Responding to Dawn’s queries, an official from the Meteorological Department said Landhi received the maximum amount of rain (6.8 millimetres). Pehalwan Goth received 2mm of rain, Gulistan-i-Jauhar received 1.8mm and Karachi airport 1.6mm.

He said the minimum temperature recorded in the city on Monday was 27 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was 37.5 degrees Celsius. Humidity — the amount of moisture in the atmosphere — was 73 per cent.

The weatherman predicted similar weather for Tuesday. He said it was expected to remain partly cloudy to cloudy with chances of rain and thundershowers.

The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Mayor Wasim Akhtar, keeping in view the rain forecast, has directed Karachi Metropolitan Corporation staff to remain alert and keep the machinery ready so that it could be deployed immediately.

Chairing a meeting after Monday’s rain, he directed the municipal service and other related staff to expedite cleaning of storm-water drains and nullahs.

He said that though the nullahs were not completely cleaned, their condition had improved due to recent cleanliness operations conducted by the local government. The mayor urged people not to throw garbage in nullahs and remove their encroachments.

He also directed officials to keep an eye on underpasses and spots where rainwater usually accumulates and act immediately.

He asked people to approach the civic agency in case of emergency on telephone numbers 1339, 0332-2685090 or 0335-7553976.
