LAHORE: A traffic warden was killed in a hit-and-run at Gulzar underpass on the Canal Road on Saturday.

Hafiz Naeem, 38, of Kasurpura signalled a truck at Gulzar underpass to stop. The driver did not stop and hit the warden and fled.

Naeem, a father of three, suffered injuries and was taken to Services Hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his wounds.

The Muslim Town police have registered a case.

A police officer on condition of anonymity told Dawn that the safe city cameras were not operational and police did not have any kind of information.

The funeral held at Begum Kot was attended by a number of wardens, SPs and Chief Traffic Officer Rai Ijaz Ahmad.

Talking to the media, the CTO said police would take special measures to arrest the driver. He said they would keep cooperating with the victim’s family and also give a job to one of the children of the deceased warden. The city traffic police gave Rs100,000 as funeral charges to the family.

The [traffic] police had deployed wardens at every entrance point of the underpasses in the city to divert heavy vehicles.

In the past, a number of crashes were reported in the city when heavy vehicles ignored signboards and stuck into underpasses.
