LAHORE: Two teenagers were killed while doing a wheelie on GT Road in Baghbanpura on Monday.

Police said Yaseen, 16, and his friend Ehtesham, 13, of Shalimar were doing a wheelie to celebrate the Independence Day when they lost balance. Both the boys were run over and killed by a truck.

The incident took place right outside the Baghbanpura police station.

The police shifted the bodies to morgue for autopsy.

Meanwhile, Ravi Road police claimed to have arrested five wheelie doers and a man involved in aerial firing on the eve of Independence Day.

Gowalmandi police also arrested 10 wheelie doers.

City Division SP Adil Memon said the police had set up pickets at different roads to take action against wheelie doers. He said they registered cases against wheelie doers and impounded their vehicles.

However, the city police’s claim to setting up pickets and stopping the wheelie doers on the eve of the Independence Day seemed to be fruitless.

The youngsters resorted to wheelie and and performed stunts on cars. The police seemed helpless in controlling the youngsters.

The motorcyclists could be seen doing stunts on Gulberg’s Main Boulevard, Kot Lakhpat, The Mall, Ferozepur, Jail and Canal roads.

GUJRANWALA: Police arrested 150 motorcyclists on Monday for doing a wheelie and running two-wheelers without silencers.

The police also seized 115 motorcycles and registered first information reports against the violators.

Senior Superintendent of Police Muhammad Nadeem Khokhar told Dawn an awareness campaign was initiated before the Independence Day where the public was informed about driving licence, dangers of wheelie and running motorcycle without silencer.

Leaflets, pamphlets and handbills were distributed among drivers and vehicles owners.

Also, social community leaders and local councils’ representatives were involved in the process.

Moreover, billboards, flexes and banners were also used to raise awareness among the people about safe driving.

The police arrested 115 motorcyclists and registered cases against them. Several people gathered outside City and Kamoki Saddar police stations who alleged police had arrested their family members without any charge.
