DERA GHAZI KHAN, Aug 12: The chief minister has ordered a fresh probe into the Saffo Case in which six officials of the local Darul Aman were suspended on charges of keeping a girl in inhumane conditions for 20 months at the cost of her mental health.

Sources said that some local members of the provincial assembly wanted the suspended officers re-instated. They further alleged that the district officer for social welfare had been transferred not long after his appointment at the behest of the suspended group.

The incident was brought to surface by an NGO on May 6 and the girl, Saffo, recovered four days later from a Darul Aman storeroom filled with human excreta, in the presence of elected representatives of the district administration. An inquiry led to the suspension of six officials of the social welfare department, Ghulam Farid Qaisrani, Jafar Khan, Ahmed Zaman Khan, Farooq, Ghulam Qamber and Kaleem.

The girl had been presented by the Choti police before Judicial Magistrate Nasir Khan. The police claimed that they had found her wandering in the area. The FIR was registered on Sept 21, 2001. The magistrate had sent her to Darul Aman. It has not yet been ascertained where the girl came from.
