KARACHI, Aug 12: A portion of Shah Latif Bhittai Road in Lyari Town remained closed for vehicular traffic on the second consecutive day, on Tuesday, as the residents continued their protest against the accumulated sewage water.
On Monday, some angry youths in Baghdadi area staged a sit-in near the Kalri police station and burned tyres, suspending the vehicular traffic on the road. The demonstrators also surrounded Lyari Town Nazim, when he reached the trouble spot. He was let off only after he issued immediate orders for draining out the stagnant water and cleaning the chocked gutter lines in the locality.
The protesters have been complaining against the stagnant water on roads and streets.
On the second day, they again put road obstructions from Kalri police station up to Ali Hotel roundabout blocking the vehicular traffic on this section of the road. A number of shopkeepers have also shut down their shutters as a mark of protest against insanitation in the locality.
Area residents and youths said that the protest would continue until the sewage on roads was drained out, leakages in gutter lines was plugged and potholes were filled.
A press release, issued by Tanzeem-i-Islah Lyari, criticized the indifferent attitude of the authorities concerned for showing lack of interest in solving civic problems of the locality.
The representative of the NGO, Taj Mohammad Brohi, also criticized City Nazim for visiting only some selected areas of the town and ignoring other areas, where the worst conditions existed.
