Hamza Ali Abbasi wants us to know (again) that item songs are bad, very bad

The actor is horrified at how PEMRA can allow such risque content to air on TV

Hamza Ali Abbasi absolutely does not approve of item numbers and he wants us all to know... again.

The actor posted on Facebook about his disdain for item songs on Sunday: "It's heart breaking and disappointing to see some brilliant Pakistani film makers still using ITEM NUMBERS to sell their films," he wrote.

"How can the censor board allow such filth to run in cinemas and how can PEMRA allow this to be run on channels? Pakistani artists finally managed to get enough respect in the society that now young educated boys and girls from good families are coming into this field, please don't spoil this hard earned respect by putting on a flesh show and calling it glamour!!! Item songs degrade women and objectify them....which goes against the essence of Women's Empowerment and Women's Rights, our religion and our norms," read his status.

Hamza's post comes around the release of Sadaf Kanwal's item number teaser of Na Maloom Afraad 2 and could be a reference to her song in the upcoming film - although his status doesn't specifically point fingers at anyone.

People were quick to point out that the actor was part of Jawani Phir Nahi Ani which featured an item song and he was also seen ogling bikini clad women in the film. Hamza received similar criticism when he first voiced his views about item songs.

In 2015, the actor shared a post on Facebook which read, "I am tremendously proud of Zhalay Sarhadi for not taking her clothes off in her performance in the film. Proud of Yasir Jaswal for not going along with the emerging trend of revealing "item numbers" in Pakistan films."

His status was construed as taking a jab at his friend and colleague Ayesha Omar, whose teaser for her Karachi Se Lahore item number 'Tutti Fruiti' also released around the same time as his post.

In an interview with Dawn, the actor had denied that his status had anything to do with the Ayesha's song and that he only meant to praise Zhalay for performing an item number while fully clothed.

Bravo. For an actor to speak out against indecency is keeping oneself above the cheap money making.

His target is achieved because media give this news so much importance that it is published in today's every newspaper. That's the smart way to remain in news.

I agree with him on this issue, making a mistake is okay as long as you refrain from doing it again. We have our own culture and we are proud of it.

I agree with him. Freedom of expression does not imply maligning women in item numbers. It doesn't suit any culture, be it eastern or western. Progressive women in the west continually write against the bikini-oriented depiction of women in their films and TV series. We shouldn't blindly follow the item number culture shown in commercial Indian films.

Instead of asking censor board to force the action, he should do the right thing, run a peaceful public awareness educational campaign so public reject them. Lack of demand will eliminate the supply naturally which will be a sustainable action. Why these self-proclaimed moral police take the easy way out, it guess no desire for hard work, typical.

Spot on Hamza This could jeopardize the future of film industry in pakistan where decent families will be reluctant to encourage their young sons and daughters to join this industry but I consider this a conspiracy against Pakistani film industry

A commendable stance by Hamza. But just like in India the concept of item number can expire if and only if "audience" vote with their feet. It's the general population that has to turn their back on such films. A survey should be made and published on the number of parents who show up to such films with kids and compare those numbers with the total audience. It will make things crystal clear for people on both sides of the debate

Completely agreed with Hamza, but he is also a part of the problem. The movie he starred in had an item song. He is the part and parcel of the celebrity toxic culture that perpetuates objectification of women.
