Pakistan on Thursday summoned acting Indian Deputy High Commissioner Raghuram to lodge a formal protest over the death of a civilian due to firing across the Line of Control (LoC) a day earlier.

Abdul Wahab, 22, was hit by shrapnel from a mortar shell as he made his way to Dothilla village after Indian forces opened fire across the LoC on Wednesday. He died on the spot.

Three others were injured in the firing incident.

The acting deputy high commissioner was summoned by the Director General of the South Asia Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammad Faisal, who "condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations," a statement released by the ministry said.

"The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws," the statement added.

The DG asked India to investigate the Wednesday's incidents of cross-border firing and those cease-fire violations committed by Indian troops in the past.

Indian forces were also urged to respect the cease-fire agreement of 2003.
