MUZAFFARABAD: A man was killed and three others were injured in Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Indian shelling from across the Line of Control on Wednesday, police said.

The casualties occurred in Kotli district after Indian shelling began at about 3:30pm, according to local officials.

Abdul Wahab was hit by splinters of a mortar shell when he was coming to his Dothilla village, police official Khurshid Ahmed told Dawn. The 22-year old man died on the spot, he added.

Elsewhere, Mohammad Shakil, 25, was injured in Balakot; Asif Mahmood, 28, was injured in Mohra Gimb and Ms Safeera, 32, was injured in Bohail Colony villages.

They were admitted to District Headquarters Hospital, Kotli, the police official said.

Military sources said that Pakistani troops effectively responded to Indian shelling.

Indian troops also resorted to small-arms fire in Chakothi sector in Jhelum valley district, but there was no report of any loss from there, according to Deputy Commissioner Abdul Hamid Kiani.
