SANTO DOMINGO (Dominican Republic), Aug 5: The Pan American Games turned into a comedy of errors on Monday as logistical problems continued to dog the event and overshadow the action.

The results service crashed again, spectators claimed of water-less rest rooms at the venues, players and fans alike suffered in unventilated arenas and ticket touts had a field day even though most venues remained half-empty.

The day was symbolised by hapless Jamaican tennis player Megan Moulton-Levy who took the wrong bus and arrived five minutes after her first-round match had been awarded by walkover to her opponent Maria Fernando Alves of Brazil.

Brazil themselves were caught cold by the United States’ change in visa regulations.

Amid all the chaos five gold medals were decided on Monday, three of them going to the United States.

Whitley Loper won the women’s trap shooting, Ivan Lee was victorious in the men’s individual sabre fencing and Chellsie Memmel came out top in the women’s all-round individual gymnastics.

Cuba, whose only gold medal of the day was won by Eimey Gomez in the women’s individual epee fencing, still lead the medals table with 12 golds but their lead over the United States was cut to three.
