PESHAWAR: Komal Khan, Laiba, Nimra Aqeel and Maira Khan on Saturday led Peshawar Region to victory in the First Nazim Peshawar Inter-district Women’s Squash Champ­ionship, defeating strong Mardan Region in the final here at the Qamar Zaman Squash Complex.

In the first match, Komal defeated Kalsoom 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 while Laiba Ijaz thrashed Emam Khan 11-4, 11-6, 11-7, with Maira overwhelming Asma Pari 10-12, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.

Squash icon Qamar Zaman who was chief guest on the occasion gave away trophies and cash prizes. The winner was awarded trophy and cash prize of Rs20, 000 while the runners-up got Rs10, 000.

Besides, each participating team was awarded cash prize of Rs5000 along with free boarding and lodging.

The squash icon said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was blessed with talent and that was why the female players of the land are coming to the fore.

He said Maria Toorpakai and Sadia Gul are international squash players representing Khyber Pakhtun­khwa and Pakistan, adding Komal Khan is a prominent U-19 player from the province apart Laiba who is a top-ranking player in the U-15 category.
