TOBA TEK SINGH: A survey by the district administration has reported huge losses to crops due to recent torrential rain and hailstorm in the district.

Last week, farmers had staged a demonstration outside the deputy commissioner (DC) office for compensation.

Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Shafiq had held talks with them and on his recommendation, DC Muazzam Iqbal Sipra had directed the agriculture department to conduct a survey to ascertain losses.

According to the survey report, 25 per cent of the 26,293 acres of standing wheat crop has been destroyed due to rain and hailstorm in more than one dozen villages.

Also, 50 per cent of the wheat crop was damaged on 2,669 acres, 75 per cent on 3,185 acres and 100 per cent on 1,210 acres. The report adds that 50 per cent of the tobacco crop was damaged on 4,184 acres, while maize crop was destroyed on 568 acres and fodder crops on 12,396 acres. Farmers demanded that the chief minister order the release of compensation to them.

KILLED: A man allegedly killed his wife for honour on Monday in a Pirmahal village, Arrouti police said.

Pervaiz Ahmed, 25, strangled his wife, Bushra Parveen, 20, for her alleged affair.

Police shifted the body to the Arrouti Rural Health Centre for autopsy and were conducting raids to arrest the accused.

ACCIDENT: Seven students of the Nawan Lahore Fatima Jinnah College were injured when their college van overturned at Nawan Lahore on Monday.

They were admitted to Nawan Lahore Rural Health Centre from where Muhammad Mateen was referred to the Faisalabad Allied Hospital.
