Sajjad stretched to the limit by Ong

KARACHI: National champion Mohammad Sajjad struggled to whip low-profile Jia Jun Ong of Singapore in the fully-stretched battle 4-3 to open his account in the 33rd Asian Snooker Championship at Doha on Saturday.

According to results made available here, Sajjad, who is going through a trauma of his wife’s accidental death in his home town Sargodha recently, came from the jaws of defeat to win his opening encounter.

After conceding three frames 8-76, 7-78, 16-70 against his opponent, he put his act together to win the next four frames 62-47, 80-1, 100-52, 72-12 and the match.

His pupil Asjad Iqbal also conjured up 4-2 frames victory over Saudi Arabia’s Abdulraouf Saigh the scores being 30-59, 84-8, 54-65, 68-1, 67-13, 102-6.

Former national champion and eighth seed Mohammad Bilal, who won his opening match against Bahrain’s Khalil Busaif straight on Saturday, got a walkover after his opponent Ulziitogtokh Davaasuren from Mongolia failed to turn up.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Federation (PBSF) President Munawwar Hussain Shaikh and former President Alamgir Shaikh are due to fly to Doha on Monday to attend the annual general meeting of the Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports (ACBS) on the sidelines of the Asian spectacle.

Rameez stars with century

KARACHI: Rameez Ahmed struck a belligerent century while guiding Eastern Star CC to an 88-run win over City Gymkhana in the PCB Fazal Mahmood National Club Cricket Championship (KCCA Zone-VI) here the other day.

In another match, Alamgir Gymkhana defeated Sun CC by seven wickets.

Batting first, Eastern Star CC reached 323 all out in 40.5 overs at the KCCA Stadium. Rameez starred by making 160 off 135 balls with the aid of 14 boundaries and five sixes.

Later Rameez picked up three wickets for only runs with his off-spin bowling as City Gymkhana were dismissed for 235 in 43.1 overs. Manzoor Ahmed was the top-scorer with 71 (six fours and a brace of sixes) while Zuhair scored 61.

Sun CC could make just 79 all out in 27.1 overs against Alamgir Gymkhana at the Lawai Cricket Stadium in Naya Nazimabad. Alamgir Gymkhana raced to the modest target in only 15 overs for the loss of three wickets.

Nishtar Club overcome Askari Alphas

KARACHI: Nishtar Club had to make extra efforts to overcome fighting Askari Alphas Club 46-36 in the Inter-club basketball tournament at the Arambagh floodlit court on Saturday evening.

The winners, who led 24-11 at half time, overcome severe pressure in the next two quarters to justify their credentials.

Nishtar Club’s Talha Amjad and Saifullah equally shared 24 points among themselves while M. Shabbar scored eight.

Shahmeer 12, Mubashir 11 and Arsalan seven were the main scorers for the losers.

Earlier, Malir Trojans Club sent Haleem Hot Boys Club packing 44-23 to open their account.

Having lost their opening game to Arambagh Club 38-40 a day before, Malir Trojans enjoyed an edge over the opponents throughout the match.

Imran turned out to be outstanding for the winners scoring 15 points. He was ably assisted by Faraz eight and Fariz six. Anas top scored for the losers and finished in double figures scoring 10 points. Nayab scored six.—Sports Correspondent

Navy, KPT to clash for title tomorrow

KARACHI: Last year’s runners-up Pakistan Navy will take on Karachi Port Trust (KPT) in the final of the KCCA Inter-departmental Cricket League at the TMC Ground here on Tuesday.

Navy will be led by Owais Ahmed Rehmani with Babar Hussain Agha his deputy, while Faisal Khan leads KPT with his vice-captain being Adnan Kaleem.

KCCA president Prof Ejaz Ahmed Faruqi will be chief guest at the post-match prize-distribution ceremony.The tournament is being organised by the Karachi City Cricket Association in which 35 departments affiliated with KCCA competed.

Premier league cricket event from tomorrow

KARACHI: Innovators CC will take on Al Habib CC in the opening fixture of the fourth Dollar East Premier Cricket League at the Aga Khan Gymkhana Ground on Tuesday.

Head of Dollar East Sports Department Zaheer Ahmed Sheikh will be the chief guest on the occasion.

A total of eight teams, divided in two groups, are taking part in the annual tournament.

Pool ‘A’ includes Innovators CC, Al Habib CC, Rangoonwala CC and Pimsat University, while Pool ‘B’ consists of Royal CC, Shalimar CC, Spartan CC and Omar CC.

The top two teams of each group will qualify for the semi-finals, according to Dollar East sports department manager Zubair Sheikh, who said the winners will get Rs100,000 and the runners-up Rs50,000.—Sports Reporter

KHA women’s wing selects 25 players

KARACHI: The Karachi Hockey Association (KHA) women’s wing has selected 25 players following two-day trials that concluded at the Customs Sports Complex on Saturday.

The players have been asked to report at the Customs Sports Complex on Monday at 4pm for training.

The panel of coaches who will supervise their training include former internationals Samsan Qadir, Naeem Ahmed and Nazli Asif.
