After killing Umair, the suspect was reporteldy locked in a room. Police broke down the door and took him into custody.

Umair's funeral was held on Sunday at Sultan Masjid in the area, following which he was laid to rest in a graveyard nearby. Karachi's Additional Inspector General Mushtaq Mahar was among the officials who attended the funeral.

Darakshan police also registered a First Information Report the same day against Faqir Mohammad, the accused in the murder case, under Section 302 and Section 392 on the complaint of the victim’s mother, the Darakshan Station Investigation Officer (SIO) Rana Abdul Latif said.

According to police, Faqir Mohammad in his confessional statement said he had intended to ask Umair's mother to give him Rs200,000, which he wanted to send to his family in his native village. When he tried to approach the woman to ask her for the amount, he was accosted by Umair, who stopped him from going upstairs to his mother's room.

During the scuffle that ensued between the two, the guard put a noose around Umair's neck and strangled him to death at around 2:30 in the morning.

Umair's mother, in her statement before the police, said the noise of the scuffle woke her up, after which she rushed to the crime scene and claimed that she saw the suspect throttling her son. She then locked the door and informed the police who arrived at the scene and arrested Mohammad.

The investigation officer further told Dawn that the suspect had purchased a rope and cut it into four pieces two days prior to the incident as he was allegedly planning to eliminate the four members of the family living in the house, including Umair's mother and his two sisters before committing a robbery.

Latif further said that Saturday was Faqir Mohammad's last day of duty at the Peshawar DIG's residence in the metropolis. He was supposed to go back to his native place in Sindh's Kandhkot-Kashmore district after duty, Latif added, saying the police also confiscated a train ticket from Mohammad's possession.

In addition, the police also seized a mobile phone as well as a wristwatch that belonged to the victim from the pocket of the suspect.

The investigation officer said he believes the murder was motivated by "robbery", which is why the police had also invoked Section 392 in the murder case.

Faqir Mohammad was later presented before a judicial magistrate in Karachi-South. The police had sought a 14-day physical remand of the suspect, arguing they needed to keep him in custody for a couple of weeks to ascertain the "motive of the murder" and to determine if he acted alone or there were others involved in the execution too.

The request, however, was rejected with the magistrate granting the police a three-day remand of the accused to conduct the investigation.
