The Foreign Office on Saturday said talks scheduled between the Pakistan Maritime Agency (PMA) and the Indian Coast Guards have been cancelled.

Nafees Zakaria, spokesperson for the FO, said talks were cancelled by India and not Pakistan.

The talks were scheduled to be held on April 16 in New Delhi.

The cancellation of talks comes after rising tensions between the two nuclear-power neighbours following the death sentence handed to convicted Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.

Jadhav was arrested on March 3, 2016, through a counter-intelligence operation in Balochistan's Mashkel area for his involvement in espionage and sabotage activities against Pakistan.

Jadhav was tried by the FGCM under Section 59 of the PAA and Section 3 of the official Secret Act of 1923.

He had confessed before a magistrate and court that he was tasked by Indian spy agency Research and Analysis Wing to plan, coordinate and organise espionage and sabotage activities seeking to destabilise and wage war against Pakistan.
